Basuri (Flute) Classes Begin: Expanding Newa Music Learning

Newa Guthi Victoria launched its weekly Basuri (flute) classes in mid-November 2025, creating another opportunity for young people, families and community members to learn and connect with traditional Newa music.

The classes were guided by Aryan and Suraj, who shared their knowledge and skills with learners in a supportive and engaging environment. The program expanded Newa Guthi Victoria’s cultural learning activities beyond Dhime Baja, providing another pathway for community members to develop musical skills while connecting with Newa heritage.

Regular Basuri classes also encouraged younger generations to take an active role in learning and practising traditional instruments, helping ensure that Newa music continues to be shared and appreciated within the community.

Newa Guthi Victoria proudly presented the first Melbourne Indra Jatra – Yenya Punhi, marking a historic milestone for the Newa community in Victoria. The grand celebration brought together approximately 6,000 people from the Newa, Nepali and wider Australian communities for a vibrant day of culture, tradition and community participation.

The celebration showcased the richness of Newa heritage through a range of traditional performances and cultural activities, including live Dhime Baja, Dhime dance, Basuri, Rath Yatra, Swet Bhairav, Samay Baji and Pulu Kisi dance.

The event was also honoured by the presence of ministers, councillors, community leaders and special guests, highlighting the growing recognition and importance of Newa culture within Victoria’s multicultural community.
