Indra Jatra Melbourne 2025: A Historic Celebration of Newa Culture

Celebrating Heritage, Community and Tradition in Melbourne On 6 September 2025, Melbourne witnessed a historic cultural celebration as the vibrant traditions of Indra Jatra (Yenya Punhi) came alive in Australia for the first time. Organised by Newa Guthi Victoria, in association with Newa Pucha Melbourne, Bajaa Khala Melbourne and Missa Pucha Melbourne, the celebration brought together the Newa community and the wider Nepali community at the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Centre. More than just a festival, Indra Jatra Melbourne 2025 was a celebration of identity, heritage and community—a moment where centuries-old traditions from Kathmandu Valley found a new home in Melbourne.

A Celebration of Living Heritage

The festival beautifully recreated some of the most cherished elements of Yenya Punhi. The chariot procession featuring Ganesh, Bhairav and Kumari became one of the central highlights of the day. The sight of community members coming together to pull the chariot was a powerful expression of unity and devotion. It also reflected the important role of women in the Melbourne Newa community, with women proudly taking part in pulling the chariot.

The Rhythm of Dhime and the Energy of Lakhe

The sounds of traditional Newa music filled the venue as performers brought the spirit of the Jatra to life. The energetic Lakhe dance captivated audiences with its powerful movements, while the playful Pulukisi (elephant) dance added colour, humour and excitement to the celebration. These performances were more than entertainment. They represented a living connection to the cultural traditions passed down through generations.

Samay Baji, Food and Community

No Newa celebration would be complete without food. The festival offered visitors an opportunity to experience Samay Baji and other traditional Newari and Nepali foods. Cultural stalls featuring food, arts and handicrafts added another dimension to the celebration and created a welcoming space for families and visitors to explore Newa heritage. From traditional music and dance to food and craftsmanship, every element contributed to the atmosphere of Yenya Punhi.

A Festival for the Next Generation

One of the most meaningful aspects of Indra Jatra Melbourne 2025 was the opportunity for younger generations to experience traditions that originated thousands of kilometres away. For children growing up in Australia, festivals like this create a direct connection to their cultural heritage. Seeing the Kumari chariot, hearing traditional instruments, watching Lakhe and sharing Samay Baji with family and friends creates memories that can be carried forward. The inaugural Indra Jatra in Melbourne was also recognised by community and government representatives, including Victoria’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ingrid Stitt and the Honorary Consul of Nepal to Victoria Nirajan Gauli. Their presence reflected the importance of cultural celebrations in strengthening Australia’s multicultural community.
