Ihee – Bel Bibah 2025 brought the Newa Guthi Victoria community together through culture, service and shared participation.
As part of the Ihee Puja, members of Missa Pucha volunteered their time to support participating families and help ensure the smooth running of the ceremony. Basuri (Flute) Classes Begin: Expanding Newa Music Learning – Community Update

Newa Guthi Victoria launched its weekly Basuri (flute) classes in mid-November 2025, creating another opportunity for young people, families and community members to learn, practise and connect with traditional Newa music.
The classes were guided by Aryan and Suraj, who shared their knowledge and skills with learners in a supportive and engaging environment. The program expanded Newa Guthi Victoria’s cultural learning activities beyond Dhime Baja, providing another pathway for community members to develop musical skills while connecting with Newa heritage.
The introduction of Basuri classes also created opportunities for younger generations to take an active role in learning and practising traditional Newa instruments. Regular learning and practice help ensure that Newa music continues to be shared, valued and appreciated within the community.
The classes became part of Newa Guthi Victoria’s growing cultural education program, alongside other music and cultural activities, providing community members with opportunities to develop skills while strengthening friendships and cultural connections.

Newa Guthi Victoria proudly presented the first Melbourne Indra Jatra – Yenya Punhi, marking a historic milestone for the Newa community in Victoria and bringing one of the Kathmandu Valley’s most significant festivals to Melbourne.
The landmark celebration brought together approximately 6,000 people from the Newa, Nepali and wider Australian communities for a vibrant day of culture, tradition, music, dance and community participation.
The celebration showcased the richness and diversity of Newa heritage through a wide range of traditional performances and cultural activities, including live Dhime Baja, Dhime dance, Basuri, Rath Yatra, Swet Bhairav, Samay Baji and Pulu Kisi dance.
A major highlight was the Rath Yatra, accompanied by traditional music and cultural performances, creating an atmosphere that reflected the spirit and vibrancy of Indra Jatra in the Kathmandu Valley. The sharing of Samay Baji also provided an opportunity for community members and visitors to experience an important part of Newa food culture and hospitality.
The historic celebration was honoured by the presence of ministers, councillors, community leaders and special guests, reflecting the growing recognition of Newa heritage and its contribution to Victoria’s multicultural community.
