Newa Guthi Victoria Presents Newa Culture at Geelong Nepali Pathshala – Community Update

Newa Guthi Victoria was pleased to visit Geelong Nepali Pathshala on 15 August 2026 for a special cultural presentation and interactive session introducing children to the rich heritage and traditions of the Newa community.
The session focused on introducing students to Newa culture, traditional music and festivals, with an engaging presentation designed to help young learners understand and appreciate Nepal’s diverse cultural heritage.
Students were introduced to Newa Baja, including the traditional Dhimay, as well as the significance of festivals such as Gai Jatra and Indra Jatra. The session explored the history, traditions and community values behind these celebrations in a simple and engaging way for children.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the students to learn about the work of Newa Guthi Victoria and its efforts to preserve, practise and share Newa culture with younger generations and the wider community.
Newa Guthi Victoria sincerely thanks the Geelong Nepali Pathshala, teachers, parents and students for the warm welcome and enthusiastic participation. We look forward to continuing to work together to promote cultural awareness, learning and community connection.

Preserving Heritage Through Dance and Dhime
Newa Guthi Victoria is proud to continue its commitment to preserving and promoting Newa culture in Melbourne through regular Newa Dance and Dhime classes.
These classes provide an opportunity for children, young people and community members to learn traditional Newa dance, Dhime music and cultural practices in a welcoming community environment.
The classes are not only about learning dance steps or musical rhythms—they are about connecting with our heritage, passing knowledge to the next generation and building a stronger community.
💃 Newa Dance Classes
Regular dance sessions are conducted at multiple locations in Glenroy and Truganina, offering students the opportunity to learn and practise traditional Newa dance.
🥁 Dhime Classes
Newa Guthi Victoria also runs regular Dhime classes for learners of different ages, helping preserve one of the most recognisable sounds of Newa culture.
👦 Kids’ Dhime Class
Special Kids’ Dhime Classes provide younger learners with an early introduction to traditional Newa music and rhythm in a supportive environment.
Through these ongoing classes, Newa Guthi Victoria is helping ensure that Newa traditions remain vibrant and continue to be passed from one generation to the next.

Ihee – Bel Bibah: Community Volunteering at Brishti Ganesh Temple – Community Update

Ihee – Bel Bibah 2025 brought the Newa Guthi Victoria community together through culture, service and shared participation.
As part of the Ihee Puja, members of Missa Pucha volunteered their time to support participating families and help ensure the smooth running of the ceremony. Their contribution reflected the strong spirit of community service, cultural responsibility and collective participation that continues to strengthen Newa traditions in Victoria.
The gathering provided an opportunity for community members to come together, support one another and take part in an important Newa cultural tradition. The involvement of volunteers also highlighted the important role of community participation in maintaining cultural practices and passing them on to future generations.
Through their service and support, Missa Pucha members contributed to creating a welcoming and well-organised environment for families participating in the Ihee ceremony.

The event provided an opportunity to showcase Newa musical instruments and traditions, introducing the rich cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley to people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds.
Through music and cultural exchange, Newa Guthi Victoria contributed to the festival’s spirit of respect, understanding, harmony and community connection. The participation demonstrated how cultural traditions can bring people together, encourage dialogue and create meaningful connections across diverse communities.

Basuri (Flute) Classes Begin: Expanding Newa Music Learning – Community Update

Newa Guthi Victoria launched its weekly Basuri (flute) classes in mid-November 2025, creating another opportunity for young people, families and community members to learn, practise and connect with traditional Newa music.
The classes were guided by Aryan and Suraj, who shared their knowledge and skills with learners in a supportive and engaging environment. The program expanded Newa Guthi Victoria’s cultural learning activities beyond Dhime Baja, providing another pathway for community members to develop musical skills while connecting with Newa heritage.
The introduction of Basuri classes also created opportunities for younger generations to take an active role in learning and practising traditional Newa instruments. Regular learning and practice help ensure that Newa music continues to be shared, valued and appreciated within the community.
The classes became part of Newa Guthi Victoria’s growing cultural education program, alongside other music and cultural activities, providing community members with opportunities to develop skills while strengthening friendships and cultural connections.

Newa Guthi Victoria celebrated Mha Puja and Nhu Daya Vintuna 1146, bringing families and community members together to honour Newa traditions, celebrate cultural identity and welcome the Newa New Year.
The celebration featured a meaningful Mha Puja program, a Token of Love distribution and a vibrant Newari dance presentation. Together, these activities created an opportunity for community members of all ages to come together, share good wishes and celebrate the beginning of a new year in the Newa tradition.
The event provided a space for families and community members to connect while passing cultural knowledge and traditions on to younger generations. Chhyama Puja 2025: Reflection and Community Gathering – Community Update

Following the successful celebration of Indra Jatra – Yenya Punhi 2025, Newa Guthi Victoria held Chhyama Puja, bringing volunteers, community members and supporters together for a meaningful gathering of puja, reflection, gratitude and community connection.
The gathering provided an opportunity for everyone involved in the festival to come together after the major celebration, express gratitude for the collective efforts that made Indra Jatra possible and reflect on the experiences of the event.
A special focus of the gathering was recognising the dedication, teamwork and contribution of volunteers and supporters. The success of Melbourne’s first Indra Jatra was made possible through the combined efforts of performers, volunteers, organisers, sponsors, supporters and community members.
