A vibrant celebration of culture, tradition and togetherness organised by Newa Guthi Victoria

Biska Jatra is one of the most vibrant and culturally significant festivals celebrated by the Newa community, marking the arrival of the New Year with centuries-old traditions, rituals, music, dance and community gatherings.

In 2026, the spirit of Biska Jatra travelled across continents and came alive in Melbourne, bringing together the Newa community to celebrate and preserve a cherished part of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

Organised by Newa Guthi Victoria, Biska Jatra Melbourne 2026 created a special space where tradition met the multicultural spirit of Melbourne.

Keeping Tradition Alive in Melbourne

Celebrating traditional festivals away from Nepal is about more than recreating an event. It is about keeping a connection with history, identity and community alive.

Biska Jatra Melbourne offered families, elders and younger generations an opportunity to come together and experience the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

The celebration brought the distinctive colours, sounds and energy of Newa culture to Melbourne, creating memories that will continue to connect the community with its heritage.

A Celebration of Community

At the heart of Biska Jatra is community.

The Melbourne celebration brought people together through cultural performances, traditional music, rituals, food and shared experiences. Friends and families gathered to celebrate the New Year while reconnecting with their cultural roots.

For many members of the Newa community, festivals such as Biska Jatra provide an important opportunity to introduce younger generations to traditions that originated in the Kathmandu Valley.

It is through these shared experiences that culture continues to live—not only in Nepal, but also in communities around the world.

The Colours and Sounds of Biska Jatra

The celebration was filled with the visual and musical elements that make Newa festivals so unique.

Traditional attire, cultural performances, music and the gathering of the community created an atmosphere full of energy and celebration.

Every moment—from the preparation and rituals to the smiles of families and the enthusiasm of participants—reflected the pride and passion of the Melbourne Newa community.

Passing Heritage to the Next Generation

One of the most meaningful aspects of Biska Jatra Melbourne 2026 was the involvement of younger generations.

For children growing up in Australia, participating in cultural festivals provides an opportunity to understand where their family’s traditions come from and why they matter.

Festivals become living classrooms where culture is experienced rather than simply explained.

Through music, dance, traditional clothing, food, rituals and community participation, the next generation can develop a meaningful connection with Newa heritage.

A New Year, A Continuing Heritage

Biska Jatra celebrates renewal and the beginning of a new year. In Melbourne, it also represents a new chapter in the continuing journey of Newa culture in Australia.

The celebration demonstrates the strength of a community that continues to preserve its traditions while embracing life in a new country.

Organised by Newa Guthi Victoria, Biska Jatra Melbourne 2026 was a celebration of heritage, unity and belonging—a reminder that traditions can travel across borders and continue to thrive when communities come together.
