Dhime Baja Classes Begin for New Learners

Newa Guthi Victoria began its weekly Dhime Baja classes for new learners on 19 April 2025, creating an opportunity for community members to learn, practise and connect with an important part of Newa musical heritage.

The classes were guided by Aryan and Rajan Guru, who shared their knowledge and skills with new learners in a supportive and engaging environment. The sessions aimed to encourage the next generation to learn traditional Newa music while building confidence, participation and community connection.

8th World Newah Day 2025: First Collaboration with World Newah Organisation

Newa Guthi Victoria proudly marked the 8th World Newah Day in collaboration and coordination with the World Newah Organisation, marking the organisation’s first such collaboration and an important milestone in connecting the Newa community in Victoria with the wider global Newah community.

The gathering at Footscray Park brought community members together for a relaxed BBQ and community gathering, creating an opportunity for families, volunteers and participants to connect, celebrate and strengthen community relationships.

A special acknowledgement was also given to the community members who proudly represented Newa culture during the Nepal Festival, recognising their time, dedication and contribution in showcasing Newa heritage to the wider community.

The event reflected the spirit of World Newah Day by bringing people together through community participation, cultural pride and shared responsibility.

The first collaboration with the World Newah Organisation marked another step forward for Newa Guthi Victoria in building stronger connections with Newah organisations locally and internationally, while continuing to preserve and promote Newa identity and heritage.

Nepal Festival 2025: Celebrating Newa Culture at Federation Square

Newa Guthi Victoria proudly participated in the Nepal Festival 2025, joining one of Melbourne’s major celebrations of Nepalese culture and community.

The Newa community brought the vibrant traditions of the Kathmandu Valley to the festival through a lively Ghitang Ghisi rally, live Dhime Baja and Dhime dance. The energetic performances added a unique Newa cultural presence to the celebration and provided an opportunity for the wider community to experience traditional music, dance and cultural expressions.

The participation highlighted the diversity of Nepalese heritage and demonstrated the important role of cultural organisations in preserving and sharing traditions with the broader Australian community.

Newa Guthi Victoria organised its first Nasa Dya Puja, bringing families and community members together for a meaningful day of worship, traditional food and community connection.

Newa Guthi Victoria proudly participated in Pako Festa Geelong 2025, marking an important milestone as the organisation’s first street performance for the wider community.

Members of the Newa community joined the festival with a vibrant Dhime Baja community rally, bringing the distinctive rhythms and energy of Newa traditional music to the streets of Geelong.

The performance provided an opportunity to share Newa music, cultural pride and heritage with the wider Geelong community and festival audiences. The powerful Dhime rhythms created an energetic atmosphere and helped introduce the traditions of the Kathmandu Valley to people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Bhintuna 1145: Celebrating Newa Culture and Community (2024)

Bhintuna 1145 (2024) marked a historic milestone as the very first event of Newa Guthi Victoria, bringing the Newa community together to celebrate culture, heritage and community spirit.

The inaugural event featured a vibrant cultural program showcasing the richness of Newa traditions, including Dhime Baja, Dhime dance, Kumari dance, traditional Newari dances and songs. Community members came together to celebrate their heritage and lay a strong foundation for future cultural activities in Victoria.

A traditional Newari Bhoj provided an opportunity for everyone to enjoy authentic Newa cuisine while sharing food, conversations and meaningful community connections.

The event also included a special Sponsor and Supporter Appreciation segment, recognising the individuals, businesses and community supporters whose contributions helped make this first celebration possible.
